Is this legal ?

Yes, building and operating a POC is completely legal along as it's used in a legal manner.
The POC is just a network component like any other router except with unlimited configuration and customization.
Although some users may install penetration testing software or 'hacking tools' on their POCs it doesn't necessarily make them illegal either. If that were the case, your computer would also be illegal because it is capable of the same functions.
With that in mind, we (The Alliance) are not responsible for any loss or damages that occur from misuse of the device or information here. You, the user, are legally responsible for your use of any of the information provided here.

What makes this any different than using a router with custom firmware like DD-WRT ?

Although similar functionality may already exist in some devices and software it is often limited and can be a challenge to configure.
A POC allows you to combine devices and software in a way that isn't as limited and is easy to set up.
A POC can be easily adapted to suit any number of purposes and can complete a network that may otherwise be lacking desired functionality.

Should I use a POC ?

This depends on whether or not your internet / networking needs are being met by your current setup.
If you are unhappy with missing functionality on your network or need to configure it to suit a particular purpose, then a POC would likely be useful.
If you are looking to protect your network and anonymity online then incorporating a VPN with a POC can protect everything on your network.
If you are interested in learning about networking or pennetration testing then building a POC is a great way to learn and even create a complete network environment for testing.

How does using a POC protect me online ?

Using a POC can protect you in a number of ways. Just by connecting through a traditional router you are providing a degree of security to your PC as the employment of NAT and creation of a network/sub-network can prevent intruders.
Since a POC uses a 'built-in' router and also often connects to the web through an additional router - then any devices that are connected are automatically 2 networks deep. Installing a proper firewall on the POC can also improve security.
Configuring your POC to use a VPN can enhance your security by a lot. Setting up a VPN on your POC allows any devices that connect through it to automatically be encrypted and tunneled through an anonymous exit-node to the web.

How secure is a POC ?

The POC is as secure as you make it. In the configuration covered on this wesite - a sub-network is created on whatever network your POC connects to. This network is private and hidden to the top-level network because it passes through the POC which can be programmed with any number of additional security features.
For best security we recommend that you - use WPA/WPA2 encryption for your wireless signal, use a VPN, install a firewall, choose strong passwords, and use common sense when online.

Is it hard to build ?

No. A strong understanding of computers and networks is suggested but not necessary. A POC uses ordinary network components that are configured to behave specific way. If you can follow the instructions - you can probably build it.

Is it expensive to build ?

Depending on whether or not you already have all the required components it can get pretty pricey to build one from scratch. Almost any router and wireless card should work. They shouldn't cost more than $40. Almost any old $50 PC will work. If you already have these at your disposal than you don't need to buy much more. Please see Required Components for a complete list of parts.

Can I use any router ?

Yes, almost any router should work with the exception of ISP-specific modem/router combo's. Some of thes lack the ability to configure the required settings.

Do I need to install an aux switch or hard-wire my router ?

Nope. Installing an aux switch / hard-wiring the router is completely optional but is a nice added touch. If you are uncomfortable making a power-connector then just use the power-adapter that came with your router.

How did you come up with the idea ?

The first POC was created for a friend to provide internet to their home using existing wireless signals.
At the time I didn't have a repeater, client/bridge device, or a router that supported custom firmware but wanted to provide the same functionality with what I had; A cheap Dlink router with wireless card and a spare Compaq Deskpro EXD.
After realizing it's potential and stability in dynamic environments the POC was quickly upgraded to fulfill several other purposes.

Will you teach me to hack ?

No. 'Hacking' is a very broad term and could refer to any number of fields. If you have a specific question, let us know and we'll try to help you out.
We do not advocate illegal access to computers or networks and any information found here for strictly for educational purposes only.

Which wireless cards support packet injection ?

It's hard to list every card that supports packet injection but there are several linux drivers available to cover a few different chipsets.
You can view compatibility info with the aircrack suite by clicking here.
There are also aircrack compatibility charts here.
